Unresolved problems in the Study of Nature and Evolution of Human Language

Actual problems in Lexicology and Lexicography

Dear participants of the discussion club

and those who are going to take part in it,

Our goal is to consider some interesting and still unresolved problems of general theory of Human Language.

Discussion may develop from one problem to another, as well as, possibly, continue parallel discussion of several previously raised questions (marked by different names in a line “subject”).

As an initial subject for the discussion I suggest the following:

“Regularities of Human Language Evolution”.

Putting forward this problem, as it seems, will give an opportunity to deal from the very beginning of the forum with the most synthetic topics of modern linguistics which embrase a variety of other more specific topics.

Sub-subjects for discussing:

For the beginning of the discussion I have suggested some works of mine on these problems.

There are some reflections on them which someone can look at below.

Other contributions are welcome!

Cognitive Model of Lexical System Evolution and its Verification

Menzerath’s Law for Morphemic Structures of Words: A Hypothesis for the Evolutionary Mechanism of its Arising and its Testing. An abstract of a paper submitted for the 4th International Conference on Quantitative Linguistics. - Prague, August 26-28 (Qualico-2000).

Cyclic Processes in Becoming of Lexical System: Modeling and Experiment.

For the beginning of the discussion for the topic "Actual problems of Lexicology and Lexicography", I suggest some new lexicographical projects as follows:

A.A. Smirnov

Large Explanatory Dictionary of Russian (SPb: Norint, 1998. - 1536p.): preliminary evoluation of the dictionary (Russian letter "X")

V.P. Grigoryev, L.I. Kolodyazhnaya, L.L. Shestakova

Proper name PUSHKIN and it's derivatives in the Dictionary of Russian Poetry of XXth century "Samovitoye slovo"

V.P. Grigoryev, L.I. Kolodyazhnaya, L.L. Shestakova

Dictionary Of Russian Poetry of XXth century "Samovitoye slovo": difficult cases of filling of  meaning zone of vocabulary article

I remind that if you want to take part in the discussion you should subscribe our list (to reach the page with terms of subscribtion, you must click here.
