SCIENTIFIC AND TEACHING
COMPUTER CENTER
Philological Faculty
History

The scientific and teaching computer center of the Philological Faculty was founded in 1990. At that time, the entire faculty used three 8086XT personal computers and a "powerful" DEC compatible computer MERA-CAMAC (256 Kb RAM with 10 Mb HDD!) which could handle eight remote terminals. A philologist at Moscow State University was a long way from computer resources! At the time, only students in the Department of Theoretical and Computer Linguistics were instructed in PL/1 programming.
In 1992, we opened our first computer lab with eleven 80286 PC models and all students began to study computer science. Departments and labs were then outfitted with computers. In 1993, a second classroom was equipped with multimedia 386 models. In 1995, faculty computers were networked. Today, most professors and students find computers essential tools for science studies, education and communication, and can't imagine their's life without PC.

Motto of the Computer Center A computer is not a luxury but an essential tool for modern living.

Can you imagine writing down your thoughts without a ballpoint pen? Although long ago you might have used a feather pen and bottle of ink, no one today would seriously use such quaint tools. Just a short time ago, computer programmers and operators were treated as genuises, but today, using a computer is about as simple as using a washing machine! The personal computer is an essential tool for modern research and communication, and it is difficult to imagine academic life without one.
